BUILDING GOOD CHARACTER

"Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it."

Matthew 7:24-27

As important as academics are, they do not necessarily produce good morals and character in students. A person can learn an abundance of knowledge over their lifetime, but it matters not if they decide to use that knowledge for selfish ambition. The hope and goal of classical education is to mold the mind and character of each student so that he or she will have the desire to use what they have learned toward upholding that which is true and good.

Charlotte Mason believed the foundation of character development began with the formation of good habits:

"The habits of the child produce the character of the man . . . every day, every hour, the parents (or teacher) are either passively or actively forming those habits in their children upon which, more than anything else, future character and conduct depend."
